Meet Melvin “Schmelvis” Goldberg.
He is fifty-two years old, Jewish, and the world’s foremost — possibly only — Jewish Elvis tribute artist. He performs in a white sequined jumpsuit with a Star of David on the back and a kippah on his head. He has been doing this, professionally and with complete conviction, for thirty years. He performs in senior homes, synagogues, temples, and Jewish community centers. He has performed worldwide — and when he says worldwide, he means Montreal to Melbourne, Buenos Aires to Budapest, with several memorable stops in between that he will tell you about if you have time and he has coffee.
He also appeared in a documentary film in 2001 — Schmelvis: Discovering the King’s Jewish Roots — which established, once and for all, his theological and cultural position: Elvis Presley had Jewish ancestry, somebody has to honor it, and that somebody is Schmelvis.
He practices Krav Maga. He writes songs about eclectic topics. He philosophizes constantly, procrastinates magnificently, and is, underneath the sequins and the sideburns, one of the most genuinely good people you will ever meet in fiction or in life.
