Descrição do livro

This book grew out of a conviction that the design and the testing of integrated circuits are not two subjects but one. Too often they are taught apart: a course on VLSI design that ends at the layout, and a separate, later course on testing that presumes the design already exists. Yet in industrial practice the two are inseparable. A circuit that cannot be tested cannot be sold, and the structures that make a circuit testable are themselves designed with the same care as the logic they serve. This text therefore treats design and test as a single continuous discipline, carrying the reader from the physics of a single transistor to the self-testing of a complete system-on-chip.
The book is organized in two movements. The first thirteen chapters develop digital VLSI design: the MOS transistor and its fabrication, the construction and characterization of CMOS logic, the subsystems from which datapaths and memories are built, and the automated flow—synthesis, hardware description languages, physical design, and low-power techniques—by which modern chips are created. The remaining nine chapters develop testing: why chips fail, how faults are modeled, how tests are generated and graded, and how design-for-testability, scan, built-in self-test, and memory and system-level test make large chips testable at all. A set of laboratory projects in Appendix A ties the two movements together in hands-on practice.
The treatment assumes a reader who has met basic digital logic—Boolean algebra, gates, and simple sequential circuits—but no prior exposure to integrated-circuit design or test. Mathematics is kept to what is needed; the emphasis throughout is on understanding why each technique exists and what problem it solves, rather than on exhaustive formalism. Worked examples appear throughout to make the ideas concrete, figures illustrate every important structure, and each chapter closes with a summary and a set of review questions. Cross-references knit the chapters together, so that the reader is continually reminded how a technique introduced in one place is used in another.
It is my hope that a student who works through this book will emerge not merely knowing how CMOS gates are built or how stuck-at faults are detected, but understanding the unity of the enterprise: that every design decision has a testing consequence, and that the engineer who holds both halves in mind is the one the industry most needs. If the reader closes the final chapter persuaded that design and test are one craft, the book will have achieved its purpose.
