In Part Two of the Haute Couture Embroidery Series, we focus on techniques to add volume to your embroidery. Many people see embroidery as a way of decorating fabric with needle and thread in a two-dimensional way: placing stitches in different colours in order to make a beautiful ‘picture’. In haute couture embroidery we tend to allow ourselves to experiment with more dimensions. We create a playground of techniques and materials to realize a specific effect that enhances the design of a garment. It is a play with opposites: colour versus non-colour, radiance versus matte, dark versus light, or volume versus even or flat. As such, a book on ‘adding volume' will show you only part of the picture. A very interesting part.
As you read this book and try out some of the embroidery techniques, you will get a more complete understanding of the richness in techniques which are available and used in haute couture embroidery. This is my personal notebook and I will tell you from my personal experience. Please read and test every suggestion I make, and only keep the ideas and tips that suit you.
