HE OPENED THE SHARK AND WROTE DOWN WHAT WAS INSIDE. NOBODY BELIEVED HIM FOR TWO THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED YEARS. It was a small one, two feet at most, with skin that took the grain off your thumb if you ran it the wrong way. It was heavy with young, and inside, each unborn shark lay joined to its mother by a cord out of its own belly, feeding the way a calf feeds. A fish was not supposed to do that. The man with the knife was about forty and had no city to go back to. Twenty-two centuries later an anatomist in Berlin opened the same fish and found the cord. This is the life of that man, told at full speed. A physician's son from a frontier town that Philip of Macedon later put to the ground, who spent twenty years in Plato's school, left the year Plato died, tutored Alexander for about three years, and then ran a school of his own in Athens for thirteen years in a city where he could not vote, sit on a jury or own a foot of ground. He was indicted for impiety at the end of it and left before the trial. About a million words of Aristotle survive, more than from any other Greek, and almost none of it is about him. The books he wrote for readers are all lost. What we have is a school's working notes, one compiler writing five and a half centuries later, four late biographies that are one lost book copied four times, an anthology of insults, and a will. Every surviving description of his face was written by somebody who disliked it. So this book shows its working. Every chapter closes with a short box, WHAT'S TRUE HERE, which separates what is attested from what is reconstructed from what is merely told.
