Apparently, stealing a base is now a moral crisis.
In the first edition of -Shouting From the Upper Deck-, we're taking a swing at one of baseball's most ridiculous traditions: the sacred, mysterious, and frequently hypocritical unwritten rules.
When the Yankees were blowing out the Red Sox, Jazz Chisholm Jr. stole a couple of bases. Instead of simply throwing him out, holding him on, or, you know, actually stopping him, the situation somehow turned into a full-blown sports controversy.
Because apparently professional baseball players are supposed to worry about hurting the opposing team's feelings.
We're not buying it.
These are grown men playing professional baseball for enormous amounts of money. Their job is to compete. If you don't want somebody stealing a base, stop the damn runner.
In Rant 1, we're taking aim at baseball's obsession with unwritten rules, the ridiculous outrage over stolen bases, the bizarre idea that retaliation somehow equals respect, and the growing tendency to treat professional athletes like they're supposed to follow the etiquette handbook at a children's birthday party.
It's baseball.
It's competitive.
And sometimes the guy on the other team is going to piss you off.
Deal with it.
