For decades, the limits of computing have been treated as physical inevitabilities. Heat, power, and scaling constraints were assumed to arise from transistors, materials, and fabrication. Entire industries were built around managing those limits rather than questioning their origin. This book documents a different explanation. The dominant energy cost in modern computing does not arise from switching speed, device density, or imperfect materials. It arises from a logical choice embedded at the foundation of digital systems: the routine erasure of information. That erasure carries an unavoidable physical cost. Heat is the consequence. The physics behind this has been known for over half a century. What was missing was a practical way to act on it. This book traces how that gap shaped the history of computing. It explains why optimization, cooling, photonics, and exotic materials could never solve the problem. It clarifies why quantum computing was pursued, why it could not replace classical systems, and why reversible computing remained theoretical for so long. It then presents a correction. By showing how logical reversibility can be achieved within standard, single-output, CMOS-compatible logic, the book establishes that the long-standing tradeoff between computation and heat is not fundamental. It is architectural. Once corrected, the assumptions that have defined modern computing no longer hold. This is not a prediction. It is a record. Written for engineers, researchers, and technical leaders, this book does not argue for speculative futures or incremental improvements. It documents why the heat problem existed, why it persisted, and why it no longer has to.
