THE EQUATIONS WERE CUT DOWN. THE MAN WHO DID IT LEFT A RECORD.
James Clerk Maxwell published twenty equations in twenty variables. He used
quaternions, an algebra built out of rotation and he pictured the field as a
medium of turning cells. The geometry was not decoration. It was how he found the
displacement current, the term that predicted light.
Within fifteen years of his death the theory had been rewritten. Oliver Heaviside
reduced twenty equations to four, threw out the quaternions as "a positive evil of no
inconsiderable magnitude", and removed the potentials on the grounds that nothing
unobservable belongs in physics.
He was right about the calculation. The four equations built the twentieth century.
He was wrong about the potentials. In 1959 Aharonov and Bohm showed that an electron travelling only where the magnetic field is exactly zero still registers the flux it
never touched, and what it responds to is the quantity Heaviside deleted, integrated
around a loop.
Maxwell Decompressed tells that story properly, then does something with it. Using
tools neither man had, it restores the geometric structure the compression removed and shows the familiar four equations as what they are: a complete description of what the field does, in a form that says nothing about its shape.
Nothing here contradicts standard electromagnetism. Everything here asks a question it declined to answer.
