What happens when we give a landscape enough attention to discover what it actually does to us?

Landscape Magick begins with a simple observation: places do not affect us equally. A path can slow us down, a tree can repeatedly hold our attention, a clearing can acquire a distinctive atmosphere, and sometimes that atmosphere begins to feel almost like presence. Rather than explaining such experiences too quickly, Dr. Jan M. Keppel Hesselink develops a practical method for investigating them.

Beginning with psychogeography, phenomenological observation and repeated walking, the reader learns to arrive without a theory, notice bodily responses, drift without a destination, map recurring differences, dwell in a place and distinguish observation from interpretation. A notebook becomes part of the method, allowing impressions to be compared across repeated visits rather than transformed retrospectively into stories.

Only gradually does the book move into more explicitly esoteric territory. Drawing on Jung, Henry Corbin and Western magical traditions, it explores spontaneous imagery, the imaginal, the Ultra-Subjective Hyperspace (USH), elemental qualities, sigils and finally evocation. Yet magick enters deliberately late. The landscape is first allowed to develop its own experiential grammar before intention, symbolic action or ritual is introduced.

The result is neither a conventional occult manual nor an attempt to explain unusual experiences away. A presence is not automatically a spirit, a coincidence is not automatically a message, and intensity is never treated as proof. Psychology, memory, expectation, ecological perception, cultural history and imaginal experience remain possible contributors throughout. What matters is disciplined encounter and discrimination.

The method grew from years of living and working at the Farm and Meditation Centre Quinta Quixote on Monte Pocilgais in the eastern Algarve, Portugal, but it requires no sacred site or spectacular wilderness. A woodland, riverbank, beach, field, park or neglected piece of land can become the laboratory, provided you can return to it.

Landscape Magick is an invitation to move from noticing, to encounter, to action, and to discover what may become possible when landscape is approached not merely as scenery, but as something with which we can enter into relationship.
