In the Chair is a free, open introduction to five practical business skills, written for first-year students with no business background: deciding, investigating, negotiating, persuading, and responding.
The book treats business as five distinct muscles you practice rather than read about. Each chapter builds one of them: making a defensible decision under incomplete information, tracing an anomaly through the records, negotiating a two-sided deal around interests rather than positions, persuading with benefits rather than features, and responding to a crisis without making it worse.
Every chapter follows the same three-rung ladder. A worked walkthrough solves one problem out loud with every number shown, including at least one wrong turn taken and then caught. A set of practice problems follows, each worked in full in Appendix A, so a reader can check themselves without an instructor. A final set of team challenges is built to be run live with a facilitator. Appendix B carries a shared four-part rubric and a plain-language glossary.
So that readers learn one world instead of five, nearly every example follows a single small business, a food truck called Sunny's, from a growth decision through a cash leak, a lease negotiation, a festival pitch, and a bad afternoon.
No prerequisites, no software, and no answers withheld. The book is the student-facing companion to five ready-to-run experiential classroom programs, and it stands on its own as a short self-study introduction.
