So you want to learn the guitar. That's a great choice. That's a great decision. What does it take to learn the guitar? Determination. Fortitude. Being willing. Discipline. Practice. Concentration. One hour of guitar practice per day is enough to see dizzying progress in your expertise, however, a single one-hour practice session will most certainly not get you the best results. Until you start, you don't really realise just how frustrating it is to become a guitar player. First of all, you have to use muscles in your fingers that perhaps have not been used before. I bet you hadn't thought about that. And then there are the pads on your fingertips that are going to have to change in order to cope with the steel or even the nylon strings. I bet you hadn't even thought of that. On top of that, there are many hours of practice ahead of you in order to get fast at moving your fingers into position and getting used to the hardened pads which are not so hard when you first begin. I bet you hadn't even thought of that! Those are the unglamorous parts of learning the guitar.
You think it is easy to just play the guitar? - well it's not. Just watching someone else and dreaming you are them is far short of reality. Your expectations are nowhere near your ability to play when you first start out. You have to think ahead as to where you see yourself in the future. Are you going to join a band? Are you going to be a crooner at your bedroom window? Are you going to be leading a group of people in singing? Are you going to be up on stage thrashing it out? These are all things that need to be thought about. At the base of it all comes that word Practice. practice learning the names of the various guitar parts. Learning how to read the chords. Learning basic finger exercise. Learning how to strum. learning guitar riffs. Developing good practice habits. The key to remember is that guitar is only hard when you first start out. The longer you stick with it and the more you practice, I can give you the good news, - the easier it gets. So get your Practice journal. Record in it when and where you practice, what chords you learned today - which fingers are needed to make the chords work. Record in your practice journal what each string means and is and what note it represents. Record in your practice journal songs you want to learn and songs you already know how to play and which chords go where in those songs. That is what a practice journal is for. It fits easily into your pocket or your guitar case so you can whip it out very easily as the inspiration takes you. A Guitar practice journal is exactly what you need to start out with your first guitar. Also don't forget to records in your practice journal where to buy and what size to get for the strings which will need replacing over time.
