Descrição do livro

The village of Embervine lay at the crook of a winding river, where the land’s veins of stone met the breathing earth of the forest. It was a place hidden from most maps, and even those who claimed to know its existence often described it as half-memory, half-myth. The roofs of its cottages were steep and moss-bound, their chimneys curling thin smoke into the brisk air. Lanterns swayed on wooden posts carved with strange runes, and cobbled streets led always back toward the heart of the settlement: the great oak, older than time itself, its roots sprawling beneath every house, every pathway, every field.
This tree, which the villagers called the Heartroot, defined Embervine. Some believed it had stood since the first dawn, its boughs older than mountains. At night, faint light glimmered through its bark like embers trapped in wood. And when the winds were hushed, when even the river stilled, the people swore they could hear voices — low, murmuring, weaving through the soil. They called them the whispering roots, though no one agreed on whether they were warnings, prayers, or laments.
For most, these whispers were simply part of life. Children grew up with them beneath their floors, traders ignored them when setting their wares, and farmers learned to hum along as though the sound were no more than the buzzing of bees. But for one youth, the whispers were more than background noise.
His name was Kaelen.
The Listener
Kaelen was not remarkable to outward eyes. He was seventeen, lean but strong from years of helping his uncle mend nets and ferry goods across the river. His hair fell dark and uneven across his brow, and his eyes held the peculiar stillness of someone always listening for things others overlooked. He had no parents, at least none who could claim him in Embervine. His mother had vanished in the high winter when he was barely able to walk, and his father had been a wandering singer who disappeared with the thawing snows.
Raised by his uncle, a fisherman too stern for stories, Kaelen grew used to silence — and into silence he leaned, letting it teach him. When other children laughed, he heard the creak of the Heartroot bending in the wind. When festivals roared with pipe and drum, he heard, beneath it, a low counterpoint, like voices pressing against the floorboards of the world.
