The oldest female in an elephant herd remembers where to find water in a drought she last survived thirty years ago. The younger elephants do not. When the dry season turns deadly and the usual waterholes fail, the whole herd lives or dies on what is stored inside her head.
The book reads the rest of the animal just as closely. The trunk packs forty thousand muscles, against six hundred in a human body, enough to shove over a tree or lift a single seed. Elephants know themselves in a mirror, grieve over the bones of their dead, and speak across kilometres in sound too low for us to hear.
And then there is the ivory. Seven hundred thousand elephants were killed in a single decade for their teeth, and the trade has never fully stopped. The picture is not hopeless. China's 2018 ban cut demand at the source, and fences strung with live beehives now turn raiding herds away without a shot.
