Your program shouldn’t fall apart the first time your plan does. You can borrow a tempo run. You can borrow a progression or a taper, too. What you can’t borrow is the reasoning that made those pieces work for somebody else’s athletes. Then a runner gets hurt. A weather day wipes out a key session. October arrives and the results aren’t matching the plan. Now what? That’s the problem this book is meant to solve. I’ve coached high school distance running for 19 years. Our teams qualified for State nine years in a row. We had two State champions, and I was named Coach of the Year in Katy ISD. Before coaching, I spent 13 years in software. Four of those were at Rational Software, teaching teams how to design complex systems. Those two careers eventually ran into each other. Most coaches aren’t short on workouts. I wasn’t. What I was missing was the structure between what I believed and what my athletes did on Tuesday. I call that structure training architecture. It’s the blueprint under the calendar. It tells you why each piece is there. You learn what can move when the week gets disrupted and what has to stay put. Build, Don’t Borrow doesn’t hand you another training system. It walks you through the 23 connected questions I had to answer before I could build one I understood. You’ll work through: The Impossible Goal that gives your season somewhere specific to go How physiology, race paces, and training roles fit together Cycles, progressions, weekly patterns, recovery, and tapering The place of race execution, strength work, and new-runner development An athlete development pipeline that doesn’t disappear when a strong senior class graduates When you’re done, you won’t have my schedule. You’ll understand how to build yours. You’ll be able to explain it to your athletes, hand practice to an assistant without asking them to read your mind, adjust when the season refuses to cooperate, and stop rebuilding from a blank spreadsheet every August. If all you want is a finished schedule, this book will disappoint you. But if you want to know why every piece belongs and what to do when one breaks, start with the first question.
