On August 15, 1914, the Panama Canal was opened to shipping traffic. Its construction was commenced by the French in 1880 and completed by the United States in 1914. The canal significantly reduced the length of the shipping route from New York to San Francisco by 8,415 miles.

To celebrate this engineering achievement, San Francisco, the largest port city on the West Coast, having arisen from the ashes of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, was chosen to officially host a world’s fair known as the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915. Millions attended the year-long Exposition which included exhibits and concessions from around the World. Millions of postcards were printed to promote and document the Exposition using hundreds of different images and photographs of the Exposition grounds, buildings, artwork, and the people who attended. Numerous postcards promoting the Exposition were themselves works of art, and many of these postcards are reproduced within the pages of this book which tell the history of this amazing World’s Fair.
