Seán Street’s first job in radio was as an actor for ORTF, Paris in 1967. He joined BBC Radio in 1970, and subsequently worked in both the Public Service and Commercial sectors of the medium. In the 1980s and ‘90s he was a regular contributor to Radio 4’s history strand, Age to Age and The Radio 2 Arts Programme. He continues to make feature programmes for Radios 3 and 4, and has been a judge for both the Radio Academy Sony Awards and the Qantas Radio Awards. In 1998 Radio 4 commissioned his Radio – Ten Poems about Sound for its celebration of National Poetry Day, and this formed the basis of his sixth poetry collection, Radio and Other Poems (Rockingham Press). He is currently Professor of Radio in the Bournemouth Media School at Bournemouth University. His research has included a grant-aided project to digitize and catalogue work from the Independent Local Radio Programme Sharing Scheme in association with the National Sound Archive, thus preserving valuable and scarce material from the early years of post-war British Independent radio. He is also involved in exploration into pre-war English language commercial radio broadcasting from the Continent, and the editing of an anthology of poems celebrating radio.
