Before there was ever that first win, there was a great deal of hard work. I learned early
on that everyone needs to find their passion. With passion comes commitment,
responsibility, accountability, motivation, and leadership. For me, my passion was sports,
any sport.
Growing up in blue-collar Gardner, Massachusetts, and being one of eight children to a
firefighter and a nurse’s aide, was a huge challenge on its own. It taught me that nothing in
life will be handed to me: not respect, not knowledge, not opportunity, and certainly not a
future beyond the neighborhood I lived in. Growing up in that bustling home guarantees
tight budgets, firm expectations, and the kind of family bond where everyone sticks
together when the pressure rises.
When sports became my passion, it was not a hobby. It directed me to my lifelong dream
of teaching and coaching. I learned that talent is not enough. Hard work, fine-tuning the
fundamentals, and a will to never give up were always the drivers for me. When setbacks
appeared, academic warning signs, injuries, or doubts, my commitment to my sport and
my team overcame the negative pressures. Losing and setbacks are a part of the learning
curve. They demand that we learn from our losses and keep trying harder. The other
alternative would be to just quit.
Finally, none of us goes on this journey alone. Throughout my life, I listened to role
models, both coaches and teammates, and learned to work hard to be the best I can be and
never give up. Now my new passion is trying to pay it forward and help others to reach
their goals.
