The American Herd follows that work across four centuries and thirty-seven breeds — from the Iberian cattle Gregorio de Villalobos put ashore on the Gulf Coast of New Spain in 1521 to the small herds being pulled back from the edge today.

It is a book about design. About people who looked at a particular piece of American country and bred an animal to fit it.

Robert Kleberg crossed Brahman onto Shorthorn on the Texas coastal plain because he needed the hump and the loose hide, and got the first breed made in America. Tom Lasater built one on a Depression-broken start and would not keep a cow that could not raise a calf without help. Warren Gammon walked past a pen at the Omaha fair in 1898, went home to Des Moines, and bought every naturally hornless Hereford he could find.

At Clay Center, Nebraska, Larry Cundiff and Keith Gregory ran the crosses that told the American feedlot what it was actually buying. In Kansas, Joe and Norma Hoagland bought an entire breed registry from the man who started it — the bull, the cows, the corporation papers — and Norma put its hand-written pedigrees into a computer, which is how most American registries actually got built and almost never how the story gets told.

The book follows what narrowed, too. One breed took the American beef herd, and the traits it was selected for came at the cost of others bred into these animals over a century. Herd books that had opened to admit new blood closed again. The recovery movement that formed to resist that narrowing turned out to carry a version of it inside.

Thirty-seven chapters. Thirty-nine full-page plates. Seven movements, from the Spanish cattle turned out on the Gulf Coast to the breeds a handful of families are keeping alive today.

This is a working cattleman's history, not a nostalgia piece. Every claim traces to a source, and the notes say plainly which facts rest on a single witness.
