Regimes of the Ancient Maya explores the vast political variability that characterized the numerous polities constituting the ancient Maya geopolitical world. Spanning two millennia--from roughly 500 BCE to 1500 CE--and covering every region of the Maya world--from the Northern Lowlands to the Southern Highlands--this volume of newly commissioned chapters offers a nuanced and varied perspective on ancient Maya politics. The authors study the distinct and transforming political regimes that shaped dozens of ancient Maya polities, along with some of the key governments in Maya political history. While some chapters focus on the figures of kings and queens, others investigate the many agents who shaped and reproduced Maya political communities.

The nineteen chapters of this volume rely on a robust and comparative theoretical framework to expand upon how Mayanists study ancient politics. The volume's case studies include investigations of the expansionist Late Postclassic K'iche' regime; the non-royal regimes of Yucatan; the integrative strategies of the Classic Snake Kingdom; how Maya politicians designed their institutional architecture; how Copan's regime handled the Maya frontier; and how "high-regime agents" managed a complex inter-regional economy.

The "regime" lens champions an empirical yet probing approach to ancient politics that transcends traditional models. This allows the authors to creatively explore the many facets of Maya politics without the restrictions imposed by strict classifications. Consequently, the chapters of this volume go beyond the political, insightfully exploring how economy, religion, kinship, history, and material culture shaped the ancient political landscapes of the Maya across time and space. Importantly, this volume weaves together evidence from archaeology, epigraphy, and interdisciplinary approaches to accurately recognize and explain ancient Maya regimes.
