Prairiegate Embershade Drumshore Meadowforge (English Edition)

The prairies of Prairiegate stretched farther than the eye could follow, a boundless sea of golden grass that swayed and rippled like waves under the gentle hand of the autumn wind. It was said that the grasses here whispered with voices of the past, carrying with them fragments of memory, half-forgotten songs, and the weight of ancient promises. The people of the gate had grown used to the soft murmurs in the wind, for they believed their ancestors lingered among the blades, guiding their steps.
On this particular dawn, the prairie did not sound as it should.
Elira Stonemeadow rose from her small bed, the first blush of the sun barely cresting the eastern hills. Her family’s homestead stood at the edge of the prairie, a modest dwelling of stone and timber, weathered by years of wind but sturdy against the elements. She wrapped a woolen shawl about her shoulders, listening to the morning air. There was always a rhythm to the plains—the sighing of the wind, the soft trill of meadowlarks, the rustle of distant deer breaking through the brush. But this morning, there was something else. A hollow note. An unfamiliar cadence beneath the whispers.
It was subtle, but Elira had always been attuned to the prairies. Since childhood she had claimed she could hear more than just the wind in the grasses. Some laughed, calling it the imagination of a dreamy child. Yet the village elders never mocked her. They told her to listen carefully, for the prairies held truths meant only for those patient enough to hear them.
She tightened her shawl and stepped outside, bare feet brushing the dewy grass.
The sky stretched endlessly above her, brushed with lavender and pale rose as dawn painted its slow canvas. She inhaled deeply, savoring the cool crispness of the season’s turning. But as she focused on the whispers, she felt the unease creep along her spine again. The voices were too restless, their tones sharp and hurried. Instead of soothing murmurs, they tumbled over one another like a hundred urgent messengers trying to speak at once.
“Elira!”
She turned quickly. Her younger brother, Callen, came running down the slope from the sheep pens, his hair a disheveled mess of copper curls, his tunic streaked with hay. He was only twelve, three years her junior, but carried himself with the stubborn pride of a shepherd twice his age. His eyes, however, were wide with unease.
