Sergeant Jack Mercer serves with 36 Battery, 50 Missile Regiment Royal Artillery in West Germany. He knows the routines of Cold War soldiering: exercises, readiness checks, unreliable vehicles, wet forests and orders that reveal only what a man needs to know. But when NATO begins taking real precautionary measures alongside the exercise, the language changes.

“This is no duff.”

It is no longer exercise play.

As Soviet forces interpret NATO preparations through the worst possible lens, tension turns into mobilisation and mobilisation into war. Mercer and his men are forced west through a collapsing battlefield while protecting a nuclear-capable Lance missile system whose ultimate use remains beyond their authority.

At the same time, Mercer’s wife Sarah is evacuated with their children through an increasingly strained network of buses, reception centres, welfare lists and failing communications. While Jack struggles to keep his men and their launcher alive, Sarah fights to keep her family together and visible inside a system overwhelmed by war.

Neither knows where the other is.

Neither knows whether the next order will be conventional.

And as communications fail and nuclear release procedures move closer to reality, the difference between preparation and catastrophe becomes dangerously small.

NO DUFF is an alternate-history Cold War military thriller built around the genuine tensions of Able Archer 83, imagining the nightmare that history narrowly avoided.
