iLaBS are designed to expose students to essential biomolecular technologies, using real-life applications and cutting-edge technologies on the web. Using real-life case scenarios, students learn how these technologies are used in the fields of medicine (for disease diagnosis), agriculture (for the generation of genetically engineered crops), and forensics (to generate genetic fingerprints). Web-based simulation software is used to make the virtual experiments visually engaging and interactive, requiring decisions and analytical input from the student. The "virtual hands-on" approach forces students to think about the experimental setup and techniques. iLaBS provide students the opportunity for repetitive practice in techniques that they would normally be limited to just doing once in a normal lab setting. Also, this virtual format allows instructors the opportunity to expose students to time-consuming and/or hazardous techniques that they would otherwise not be able to experience. These exercises are developed to meet the needs of majors and mixed-majors students, but can be easily modified for non-majors.
