The wind came first — dry and restless, sweeping through the cobbled streets of Northsquare like an old spirit that had lost its way. It carried the scent of frost and soot, a mingling of winter’s breath and something older, something burnt long ago but never quite extinguished. The town itself sat on the northern edge of the known world, hemmed in by forests of bone-white birch and the glacial expanse beyond. Its people had grown used to silence, to long nights where even the stars seemed too cold to shine.
But on that night, silence was broken.
A low hum began beneath the earth — faint at first, then swelling like a heartbeat through the stones. The sound seemed to move with purpose, traveling from one end of Northsquare to the other until it reached the fountain at the center of town: an ancient structure carved from volcanic glass. There, the hum transformed into something else — a note, a tone, a song. It wasn’t music as anyone might know it, but a resonance that trembled in the bones and made the teeth ache.
That was the first sign of the Hollowsong returning.
Aren Vale stood on the balcony of his rented attic room, watching the moon cast its cold reflection on the frozen rooftops. The boy was twenty-two, a scholar of forgotten tongues and misplaced myths — though in Northsquare, that meant little. Here, knowledge was regarded with suspicion, especially when it came from beyond the river border. Aren had arrived only a month ago, carrying with him a trunk full of old journals, a cracked telescope, and questions that no one wanted answered.
He had come searching for the truth behind a single word: “Hollowsong.”
It was written in his late father’s notes, scrawled between sketches of lunar phases and fire symbols. His father, a linguist obsessed with “echo-craft” — the belief that sound could hold memory — had vanished during a research expedition to this very town thirteen years ago. The authorities had called it an accident. Aren had never believed that.
He took a slow breath, watching it plume into white mist. The moon that night seemed unnaturally large, its silver surface trembling as though seen through rippling water. The townsfolk had told him that on nights like this, you shouldn’t look too long at it — that it watched back.
A flicker caught his eye. Down below, near the fountain, a lone figure was standing motionless
