Introduction to Cancellations: The book explains the process of cancellation, which renders postage stamps unusable again. The use of postage stamps in India became compulsory on October 1, 1854. 19th Century postal cancellations are of significant philatelic interests. They provide insights into the growth of the Imperial postal system, trade routes and administrative control under the British rule. Collectors value these cancellations for their postal historical significance.
Renouf's Contributions: The book extensively quotes Renouf [‘Early Indian Cancellations: Renouf Insights’ (Basically 1950 Edition – Reprint) by Lalit Kumar Lakhotia , published by Amazon in 2024.] work on early Indian cancellations and postmarks, detailing the original instructions and types of cancellations used.
Types of Cancellations: The book categorizes various types of cancellations used during the Victoria era ending on 22nd January 1901, including three types classified by ISC (India Study Circle for Philately).
Descriptions of Type and sub-type: Renouf had listed 43 varieties of postal cancellations. He had, also, listed 43 railway cancellations (including 7 sorting & 2 rail guards). There are 52 and 29 sub-types among postal cancellations, and railway post marks, respectively. As these sub-types are scarce or rare, I shall be skipping discussions thereon usually except a few select cases. Also, Renouf listed 34 other post marks.
I shall exhibit from my collections a few selected entire with type after type; first diagram and brief description from the Classic (Re-Print Edition 2024), secondly a narrative for exhibits with details of adhesives used and cancellations thereon. In cases of town numbered cancellations, I shall be giving an appendix with list of post offices using specific Type. I shall exhibit representative from my collections of the stationaries issued during the QV Era as well as privately issued /so-called ‘native’ envelope, with narrative of cancellations aspect as I understand the Renouf classic. Renouf had revised his original book with scope of study being extended to 1918 and same was published as “Appendix” to The Encyclopaedia of British Empire Stamps Vol III; Published by Robson Lowe Publications (1951 Edition). He recalled “Railway cancellation have been worked out in detail – a very extensive subject” (page 3 of the Reprint edition 2024). However, he did not touch cancellations introduced around 1880’s. In a nutshell ,Chapter II, III, & IV, I shall be giving a brief description from the Classic, with full reference, along with examples on cover, whenever available otherwise a few stamps. In Chapter V, I simply created three Infographic with all main postal cancellations, post office marks and railway marks which should be helpful to identify most of these cancellations. (Digital photos may be asked to get a larger print in your study room.)
I have given a description of the post -Renouf cancellations came into use in Chapter VI. In Chapter VII, VIII & IX , I have given descriptions of railway , diverse Postal Stationery issued during the QV Era and used with diverse cancellations identified with the help of the Renouf Classic as well as diverse so-called native & privately printed envelope/letter sheet affixed with diverse adhesives and used & identify similarly. In Chapter X, I have given my observations. One needs not refer to the classic in general but a serious student of cancellations must study the Reprint Edition.
