Although the term "Berber" is historically common in Western scholarship, it is an exonym derived from external roots, meaning Barbarian.
Native speakers say Tamazight for the language and Amazigh(plural: Imazighen, meaning "Free Men") for the people. We will call it Tamazight in this book.
The language is indigenous to North Africa, especially the Atlas Mountains area. It is actively spoken by roughly 14 million people, primarily in Morocco and Algeria, as well as smaller diaspora and nomadic communities in countries like Niger, Mali, Libya, and Tunisia.
